Is Antifa the Answer to an Effective Anti-Fascist Movement? mintpressnews.com In March, Richard Spencer, a prominent white supremacist, canceled his speaking engagements at U.S. universities, saying he was deterred by "antifa," a loose international network of radical anti-fascist groups that aims to shut down far-right talks and rallies. For antifa members and supporters, Spencer's capitulation was both vindication of their aggressive tactics and a sign of their success in opposing fascism. | These confrontations between far-right activists and antifa groups — on the rise since the election of Donald Trump — are often presented as involving two opposing values: free speech on one side and the danger of allowing fascists to appear in public on the other. The U.S. media treat politicians with kid gloves; they fawn over them, befriend them, apologize for them. Is Antifa the Answer to an Effective Anti-Fascist Movement?
Brian Martin | mintpressnews.com | 2018-05-04
In March, Richard Spencer, a prominent white supremacist, canceled his speaking engagements at U.S. universities, saying he was deterred by "antifa," a loose international network of radical anti-fascist groups that aims to shut down far-right talks and rallies. What is missing in this framing, however, is an understanding of the dynamics of censorship and of nonviolent action as an alternative. | At the forefront of this clash of values is Mark Bray's…

MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace Explains Trump's Thoroughly Corrupt Idea for Transforming the Justice Department
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
"Effectively, what the President's saying is he doesn't want an actual Department of Justice. " | President Donald Trump's consistent and strident attacks on the Justice Department suggest not only a frustration with its current leadership but a desire to completely undermine the purpose of the institution, according to MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace. Wallace made her case for the president's corrupt view of the department's purpose Friday on her show "Deadline: White House. ""There's something so profoundly disturbing about the frame," she said. "The frame we should all stare at. . . is that this president wants exactly what he described to the New York Times in an interview at Mar-a-Lago. He wants 'his guys,' he wants his Roy Cohn, running the U. S. Department of Justice. "Evan McMullin, a former intelligence officer and presidential candidate, agreed. "Effectively, what the President's saying is he doesn't want an actual Department of. . .

It only takes a moment — click here to support independent reporting! | Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's new personal lawyer, went on Sean Hannity's show and "Fox & Friends" this week, giving dense and baffling interviews about his client's legal issues that nearly blew up the capitol. Interior Secretary and Sen. Lamar Alexander Propose Killing the Planet to Save National Parks
truth-out.org | truth-out.org | 2018-05-04
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke joined with US Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) to argue that the best way to fix the national parks is by pillaging public lands for fossil fuels. | Their CNN op-ed published Wednesday focuses on the $11.6 billion repair backlog the parks face — "our parks are being loved to death," they write. They say revenue to address the infrastructure repairs can come through their proposed legislation, the National Park Restoration Act (S.2509). Lamar is the sponsor of the bipartisan legislation, which he introduced at the behest of Zinke, and as the Interior Department noted in a press release, it "follows the blueprint laid out in Secretary Zinke and President Trump's budget proposal, the Public Lands Infrastructure Fund.‚Äã" | As Zinke and Lamar, lay out: | These revenues will come from energy leases on all…

Study Suggests Sexism Literally Causes Physical Illness
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
Misogyny has negative health impacts. | Recent social movements such as the Women's March, #MeToo, #TimesUp, #BalanceTonPorc (#OutYourPig), and #SayHerName draw attention to the broad spectrum gender-related violence that is pervasive in the United States and around the world. Social science research takes a different form than protests, but paints a similar picture. A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in the U. S. experience contact sexual violence in their lifetime. Contact sexual violence is defined as being made to have sexual intercourse with someone else, being sexually coerced, or having unwanted sexual contact. Other types of sexism, including gender discrimination and sexual harassment, are even more frequent. A 2016 report from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission estimates that between 25 percent to 85 percent of women in. . .

How the U.S. Military Played a Role in America's Obesity Crisis
Daniel Ross, Independent Media Institute | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
Seventy percent of products found in a typical supermarket have origins in the military's food experiments. | There's no avoiding the debris of modern living on a trip to your local grocery store–rows and rows of foods and products that, if not ready to eat, are designed and packaged to be prepared quickly and to last an age. Makes sense, right? Busy lives require time-saving measures. But it turns out that a considerable quantity of these items exist as a result of food-preservation experiments first conducted by the military, at the nexus of which is the Natick Soldier Systems Center, the U. S. Army's food science lab in Massachusetts. What's more, the military has partnered for decades with private corporations and state universities in order to refine these innovations and to disseminate them as widely into civilian life as possible–a partnership with a. . .

Will the Media Ever Stand Up to Trump? With Judd Apatow

The U.S. media treat politicians with kid gloves; they fawn over them, befriend them, apologize for them. Such behavior was bad enough under previous administrations, but it's reached a breaking point under Donald Trump — a president who, according to James Comey's memos, jokes in private about having reporters locked up and raped behind bars as a way of getting them to give up their confidential sources. This Is What I Learned from Attending an Actual Flat-Earth Convention
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-05-03
While flat earthers seem to trust and support scientific methods, what they don't trust is scientists. | Speakers recently flew in from around (or perhaps, across? ) the earth for a three-day event held in Birmingham: the UK's first ever public Flat Earth Convention. It was well attended, and wasn't just three days of speeches and YouTube clips (though, granted, there was a lot of this). There was also a lot of team-building, networking, debating, workshops — and scientific experiments. Yes, flat earthers do seem to place a lot of emphasis and priority on scientific methods and, in particular, on observable facts. The weekend in no small part revolved around discussing and debating science, with lots of time spent running, planning, and reporting on the latest set of flat earth experiments and models. Indeed, as one presenter noted early on, flat earthers try. . .

In a Crackdown in Argentina, Police Shot for the Head and Blinded Protesters with Rubber Bullets

Thirty-six-year-old Hugo Adrian Palazón is a cartonero, or recycler, from a poor neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He supports his wife and five children by collecting cardboard boxes, tin cans, and plastic bottles on the city streets. Or at least he did, until he lost one of his eyes. | On December 18, 2017, thousands marched in Buenos Aires against a controversial pension reform that unions said would slash benefits and hurt retirees. The demonstration wound, for blocks, around Argentina's Congress. Most of it was peaceful, but police faced off for hours with a group of several hundred protesters hurling rocks, chunks of concrete, and other projectiles. | And then the police pushed back — hard. They cleared the plaza and its neighboring streets with force. Cellphone footage from the day shows people running from the approaching troops across the square, corralled down…

British Neo-Nazis Are on the Rise — and They're Becoming More Organized and Violent
