The Conversation (2018-05-04). Those New Employment Numbers Trump Is Bragging About Look Great Because They Don't Tell the Full Story. alternet.org Students, retirees and others not in the labor force are excluded | The latest jobs report has gotten a lot of analysts, policymakers and talking heads once again asking whether the U. S. is at full employment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on May 4 that the U. S. unemployment rate fell to 3. 9 percent, which is the lowest level since December 2000. The unemployment rate includes anyone 16 or older who is actively searching for work in its calculation, which means students, retirees and others not in the labor force are excluded. Does this mean the economy is at full employment? What is full employment anyway? To the typical person on Main Street, the idea of full employment usually means everyone in the country is working, which would imply a jobless rate of essentially zero. This has never happened. The lowest unemployment. . .

Wake Up and Stop the Madness of a War With Iran. truthdig.com The Iran nuclear deal is on the verge of sinking on May 12, when Donald Trump will decide whether or not to waive the nuclear-related sanctions, as the deal calls for. While the world is cheering the upcoming meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (including Trump's fans calling for a Nobel Peace Prize), Trump is needlessly and recklessly driving our nation down a path toward war with Iran—and neither Congress nor the American people seem to care. | French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, fearing the consequences of a broken deal, visited the White House. Macron tried to appease Trump by suggesting new agreements to the deal, something Iran's government views as ludicrous. According to Iranian president Hassan Rouhani—who has been subjected to enormous domestic criticism for striking a deal with Washington only to…

Pence Outlines Interventionist Plans in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. mintpressnews.com Ramping up interventionist rhetoric and policy against progressive governments in the region, United States Vice President Mike Pence said working for "freedom" in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela is a priority for Donald Trump's administration during a ceremony in which new U.S. ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carlos Trujillo, was sworn in. | "We will stay by the side of those who long for freedom and we will confront their oppressors," Pence said during the event in the White House. | During his speech the U.S. vice president singled out Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Of Cuba he said the island continued to live "under tyrannical legacy," using terminology and rhetoric used by right-wing Cuban Americans against the communist government of Cuba. | Later it was Nicaragua's turn. "I would love to speak. I would love to. Nobody wants to speak more than me," Trump told reporters before departing from the White House to speak at the NRA convention in Dallas. "The President also falsely claimed that Robert Mueller's team is comprised entirely of Democrats, and threw a jab at Hillary Clinton, calling what would have been her 2016 victory night party a "funeral. They say revenue to address the infrastructure repairs can come through their proposed legislation, the National Park Restoration Act (S.2509). Lamar is the sponsor of the bipartisan legislation, which he introduced at the behest of Zinke, and as the Interior Department noted in a press release, it "follows the blueprint laid out in Secretary Zinke and President Trump's budget proposal, the Public Lands Infrastructure Fund.‚Äã" | As Zinke and Lamar, lay out: | These revenues will come from energy leases on all…

The Conversation (2018-05-04). Here's How America Can Avoid a Trade War with China. alternet.org The answer might be a boycott. | The U. S. and China are locked in negotiations both sides say they hope will avert a painful trade war. The Trump administration has threatened to impose a series of tariffs unless China agrees to limit what he calls "its illicit trade practices. " The Chinese government, for its part, appears unwilling to accede to his demands and has offered some retaliatory trade sanctions of its own. The ostensible reason President Donald Trump is willing to risk a trade war is because he argues — justifiably — that U. S. companies have been taken advantage of by their Chinese counterparts for decades, required to hand over lucrative intellectual property in exchange for access to China's growing middle class. Tariffs, however, aren't the answer to that problem, as my research in international economics and the. . .

Michigan Tells Residents That Flint Water Is Safe Now—But Public Trust Is Totally Eroded. alternet.org People aren't confident in the veracity of the government's claims. | On April 6, 2018, with little warning, the state of Michigan closed water point of distribution (POD) centers that have provided residents in Flint for the past three years with bottled water to drink, cook and bathe. This move was based on analysis showing that the city's water quality had tested below action levels defined in federal drinking water regulations for nearly two years. The state's decision to close the PODs signals that with respect to water quality, Flint's water crisis is over. But for thousands of Flint residents, the trauma it inflicted persists. The actions that lead up to the Flint water crisis did not occur in a vacuum. As a sociologist based in Michigan, whose research focuses on social inequality, racism and racial health disparities, I was driven to explore. . .

Daniel Ross, Independent Media Institute (2018-05-04). How the U.S. Military Played a Role in America's Obesity Crisis. alternet.org Seventy percent of products found in a typical supermarket have origins in the military's food experiments. | But it turns out that a considerable quantity of these items exist as a result of food-preservation experiments first conducted by the military, at the nexus of which is the Natick Soldier Systems Center, the U. S. Army's food science lab in Massachusetts. What's more, the military has partnered for decades with private corporations and state universities in order to refine these innovations and to disseminate them as widely into civilian life as possible—a partnership with a federal mandate, it should be noted. Some experts estimate that as many as 70 percent of products found in a typical supermarket originate with, or are influenced by, these experiments conducted by the military. Brian Martin (2018-05-04). Is Antifa the Answer to an Effective Anti-Fascist Movement? mintpressnews.com In March, Richard Spencer, a prominent white supremacist, canceled his speaking engagements at U.S. universities, saying he was deterred by "antifa," a loose international network of radical anti-fascist groups that aims to shut down far-right talks and rallies. For antifa members and supporters, Spencer's capitulation was both vindication of their aggressive tactics and a sign of their success in opposing fascism. | These confrontations between far-right activists and antifa groups — on the rise since the election of Donald Trump — are often presented as involving two opposing values: free speech on one side and the danger of allowing fascists to appear in public on the other. What is missing in this framing, however, is an understanding of the dynamics of censorship and of nonviolent action as an alternative. | At the forefront of this clash of values is Mark Bray's…

Click here. | When comedian Michelle Wolf ridiculed the brazen dishonesty of the president and his equally deceitful staff, journalists at the White House Correspondents Dinner threw her under the bus. The U.S. media treat politicians with kid gloves; they fawn over them, befriend them, apologize for them. Such behavior was bad enough under previous administrations, but it's reached a breaking point under Donald Trump — a president who, according to James Comey's memos, jokes in private about having reporters locked up and raped behind bars as a way of getting them to give up their confidential sources. On episode seven of Deconstructed, comedian and Hollywood director and producer Judd Apatow joins Mehdi Hasan to discuss the…

Cody Fenwick, AlterNet (2018-05-03). Retired General Explains Why the 'Extraordinary Number of Contacts' Between Trump's Campaign and Russia Needs an Explanation. alternet.org Gen. Michael Hayden gets to the heart of why special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is so important. | Retired Gen. Michael Hayden, who has served under Republican and Democratic administrations as CIA director and NSA director, explained Thursday why special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation remains a vital investigation for the United States. Many — particularly those in right-wing media — have insisted that Mueller's investigation has gone on too long, that there's been of evidence of collusion, and that it would be better if the special counsel's team were simply disbanded. But Hayden insists that there is good reason that Mueller's investigation should be allowed to continue. Students, retirees and others not in the labor force are excluded | The latest jobs report has gotten a lot of analysts, policymakers and talking heads once again asking whether the U. Does this mean the economy is at full employment? What is full employment anyway? The Iran nuclear deal is on the verge of sinking on May 12, when Donald Trump will decide whether or not to waive the nuclear-related sanctions, as the deal calls for. While the world is cheering the upcoming meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (including Trump's fans calling for a Nobel Peace Prize), Trump is needlessly and recklessly driving our nation down a path toward war with Iran–and neither Congress nor the American people seem to care. | French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, fearing the consequences of a broken deal, visited the White House. Macron tried to appease Trump by suggesting new agreements to the deal, something Iran's government views as ludicrous. According to Iranian president Hassan Rouhani–who has been subjected to enormous domestic criticism for striking a deal with Washington only to…

Pence Outlines Interventionist Plans in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela
teleSUR | mintpressnews.com | 2018-05-04
Ramping up interventionist rhetoric and policy against progressive governments in the region, United States Vice President Mike Pence said working for "freedom" in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela is a priority for Donald Trump's administration during a ceremony in which new U.S. ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Carlos Trujillo, was sworn in. Pence accused Daniel Ortega's government of "brutally repressing" peaceful protesters, a common allegation used…

Is Antifa the Answer to an Effective Anti-Fascist Movement?
Brian Martin | mintpressnews.com | 2018-05-04
In March, Richard Spencer, a prominent white supremacist, canceled his speaking engagements at U.S. universities, saying he was deterred by "antifa," a loose international network of radical anti-fascist groups that aims to shut down far-right talks and rallies.

It only takes a moment — click here to support independent reporting! | Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's new personal lawyer, went on Sean Hannity's show and "Fox & Friends" this week, giving dense and baffling interviews about his client's legal issues that nearly blew up the capitol. Interior Secretary and Sen. Lamar Alexander Propose Killing the Planet to Save National Parks
truth-out.org | truth-out.org | 2018-05-04
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke joined with US Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) to argue that the best way to fix the national parks is by pillaging public lands for fossil fuels. | Their CNN op-ed published Wednesday focuses on the $11.6 billion repair backlog the parks face — "our parks are being loved to death," they write.

Trump Seriously Tells Reporters That 'Nobody Wants to Speak' to Mueller 'More Than Me&#039
David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
The president also claimed he's done "nothing wrong," despite everything he's overtly done wrong. | President Donald Trump is back to claiming that he would "love to" testify before Special Counsel Robert Mueller, but he'd have to "override" his lawyers because he won't get a fair hearing. "I would love to speak. I would love to. Nobody wants to speak more than me," Trump told reporters before departing from the White House to speak at the NRA convention in Dallas. "I would love to speak because we've done nothing wrong. "The President also falsely claimed that Robert Mueller's team is comprised entirely of Democrats, and threw a jab at Hillary Clinton, calling what would have been her 2016 victory night party a "funeral. " And he called his winning the election "a great day" for America. He also called the investigation into Russia's interference in the. . .

Here's How America Can Avoid a Trade War with China
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
The answer might be a boycott. | The U. S. and China are locked in negotiations both sides say they hope will avert a painful trade war. Tariffs, however, aren't the answer to that problem, as my research in international economics and the. . .

Michigan Tells Residents That Flint Water Is Safe Now–But Public Trust Is Totally Eroded
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
People aren't confident in the veracity of the government's claims. As a sociologist based in Michigan, whose research focuses on social inequality, racism and racial health disparities, I was driven to explore. . .

How the U.S. Military Played a Role in America's Obesity Crisis
Daniel Ross, Independent Media Institute | alternet.org | 2018-05-04
Seventy percent of products found in a typical supermarket have origins in the military's food experiments. | But it turns out that a considerable quantity of these items exist as a result of food-preservation experiments first conducted by the military, at the nexus of which is the Natick Soldier Systems Center, the U. S. Army's food science lab in Massachusetts. What's more, the military has partnered for decades with private corporations and state universities in order to refine these innovations and to disseminate them as widely into civilian life as possible–a partnership with a federal mandate, it should be noted. Some experts estimate that as many as 70 percent of products found in a typical supermarket originate with, or are influenced by, these experiments conducted by the military. But as Anastacia Marx de Salcedo, author of the well-received 2015 book Combat-Ready. . .

Will the Media Ever Stand Up to Trump? With Judd Apatow

Retired General Explains Why the 'Extraordinary Number of Contacts' Between Trump's Campaign and Russia Needs an Explanation
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-03
Gen. "The Mueller investigation has gotten pretty broad now, but it's origins are in a counterintelligence investigation. It is: What were the Russians trying to do, and did anyone over here engage in helping them? " he. . .

'They're Acting Like Storm Troopers': Rudy Giuliani Makes a Ridiculous Attack on the Justice Department
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-03
The president's lawyer doesn't believe recent reports that Michael Cohen was wiretapped. | Rudy Giuliani only recently joined President Donald Trump's legal team, but he is already on the attack. On Thursday, he told the Daily Beast that federal investigators are acting like "storm troopers" in their pursuit of the president and his associates. The remarks came after reports broke that investigators had wiretapped Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's phone as part of a criminal probe into the attorney's activities. Giuliani doubted the reported, saying, "You can't wiretap a lawyer. This Is What I Learned from Attending an Actual Flat-Earth Convention

While flat earthers seem to trust and support scientific methods, what they don't trust is scientists. | Speakers recently flew in from around (or perhaps, across? ) the earth for a three-day event held in Birmingham: the UK's first ever public Flat Earth Convention. It was well attended, and wasn't just three days of speeches and YouTube clips (though, granted, there was a lot of this). There was also a lot of team-building, networking, debating, workshops — and scientific experiments. Yes, flat earthers do seem to place a lot of emphasis and priority on scientific methods and, in particular, on observable facts. The weekend in no small part revolved around discussing and debating science, with lots of time spent running, planning, and reporting on the latest set of flat earth experiments and models.
