Eric Draitser (2018-05-01). How Establishment Democrats Manufacture Faux Progressive Congressional Campaigns. mintpressnews.com When Bernie Sanders took the stage in Washington Square Park in New York City on a cold April night in 2016, he faced a crowd of approximately 25,000 adoring fans, many of whom were young, progressive, and desperately seeking a political alternative to the seemingly ineluctable game of Russian roulette that was a Clinton-Trump crapshoot. | They waited for hours, listened to progressive celebrities like Spike Lee and Tim Robbins give rousing speeches, and were finally rewarded when the self-proclaimed democratic socialist from Vermont approached the podium with his characteristic lack of flair and precisely crafted economic populist stump speech which he had delivered a thousand times. | And yet, the energy coursing through the crowd told the story. Rod Rosenstein Says He Has Been Privately Threatened as Republicans Draft Articles of Impeachment. alternet.org If Trump is trying to intimidate Rosenstein, it could factor into a potential obstruction of justice case against the president. | Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein revealed Tuesday at an event at Washington, D. C. 's Newseum that he has been privately "threatened," a troubling indication of the level of threat the rule of law faces under President Donald Trump's administration. He made the remarks when he was asked about recently leaked efforts to draft impeachment documents against him by congressional Republicans. "I don't have anything to say about documents like that that nobody has the courage to put their name on," he said. Peter Maass (2018-05-01). Ten Journalists Were Just Killed in Afghanistan. Please STFU About the White House Correspondents' Dinner. theintercept.com Over the weekend, 10 Afghan journalists were eating their last meals and having their final conversations with their loved ones, but they didn't know it. On Monday, they were murdered in attacks that specifically targeted them — one was shot by assailants in Khost province, the others were killed in Kabul when a suicide bomber mixed with them as they reported on a bombing that had just happened. This hardly counts as news in America, because we have peculiar ideas on what constitutes bravery in journalism. | While these Afghan reporters were living their final hours in relative obscurity, hundreds of American journalists were celebrating themselves in a glitzy Washington, D.C. ballroom. Their good humor was thrown off kilter when a comedian, Michelle Wolf, delivered a lacerating routine that criticized the Trump administration, especially its chief spokesperson, Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

New Bipartisan Bill Could Give Any President the Power to Imprison U.S. Citizens in Military Detention Forever. theintercept.com One of the most outrageous acts of Barack Obama's presidency was his failure to veto the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2012. | The fiscal year 2012 NDAA included provisions that appeared to both codify and expand a power the executive branch had previously claimed to possess — namely, the power to hold individuals, including U.S. citizens, in military detention indefinitely — based on the Authorization to Use Military Force passed by Congress three days after 9/11. | The New York Times warned that the bill could "give future presidents the authority to throw American citizens into prison for life without charges or a trial." Not surprisingly, Obama's decision generated enormous outcry across the political spectrum, from Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, on the right to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on the left. | However, the NDAA did provide…

When Bernie Sanders took the stage in Washington Square Park in New York City on a cold April night in 2016, he faced a crowd of approximately 25,000 adoring fans, many of whom were young, progressive, and desperately seeking a political alternative to the seemingly ineluctable game of Russian roulette that was a Clinton-Trump crapshoot. They didn't care they'd heard it all many times before, that Sanders was reading from the same cue cards as he had a…

Rod Rosenstein Says He Has Been Privately Threatened as Republicans Draft Articles of Impeachment
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-01
If Trump is trying to intimidate Rosenstein, it could factor into a potential obstruction of justice case against the president. "There have been making people who have been making threats, privately and publicly, against me for quite some time. And I think they should understand by now: The Department of Justice is not going to be extorted. We're going to do what's. . .

Condoleezza Rice Tells 'Fox and Friends' It Won't Be a 'Disaster' if Trump Pulls U.S. from Iran Nuclear Deal
Media Matters Staff, Media Matters | alternet.org | 2018-05-01
The former secretary of state's comments were disturbing. | From the May 1 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends: CONDOLEEZZA RICE (FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE): I actually think if we pull out now, it's not going to be the disaster that everybody is talking about. I would not have signed this deal. I don't think it was a very good deal. I think we were in a hurry to get a deal, and we left a lot on the table and, as you said, they got a lot up front. The allies love this deal, and I certainly hope that in their meeting with President Trump that [French President Emmanuel] Macron and [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel talked about ways to improve the deal if we're going to stay in it. But if we get out of this deal, it's going to be. . .

Denying Asylum Seekers Would Be a Stain on America's Conscience
Eugene Robinson | truthdig.com | 2018-05-01
The "caravan" of asylum-seeking migrants that has finally arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border is a test of American character and purpose–a test that President Trump wants us to fail. | I put caravan in quotation marks because the group that reached Tijuana hardly qualifies for the term. Just a few dozen would-be entrants presented themselves at the Port of San Ysidro on Sunday–only to be told that U.S. immigration officials were too busy to attend to them. Another several hundred were reported to be in the general area, waiting their turn to attempt to cross the border. | Trump has spoken of these people as if they were some kind of rampaging horde. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has accused them of "a deliberate attempt to undermine our laws and overwhelm our system." The truth is that this sort of thing happens every year:…

New Bipartisan Bill Could Give Any President the Power to Imprison U.S. Citizens in Military Detention Forever
Jon Schwarz | theintercept.com | 2018-05-01
One of the most outrageous acts of Barack Obama's presidency was his failure to veto the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2012.

"Talking About History Is Way We Liberate America": New Memorial Honors Victims of White Supremacy
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-05-01
The National Memorial for Peace and Justice opened last week in Montgomery, Alabama–a monument to victims of white supremacy in the United States. The memorial's centerpiece is a walkway with 800 weathered steel pillars overhead, each of them naming a U.S. county and the people who were lynched there by white mobs. In addition to the memorial dedicated to the victims of lynching, its partner site, the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, also opened last week. For more, we speak with Bryan Stevenson, the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, the nonprofit behind the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the country's first-ever memorial to the victims of lynching in the United States.

Ten Journalists Were Just Killed in Afghanistan. Please STFU About the White House Correspondents' Dinner
Peter Maass | theintercept.com | 2018-05-01
Over the weekend, 10 Afghan journalists were eating their last meals and having their final conversations with their loved ones, but they didn't know it.
