Bernie Sanders Has a Sweeping Plan to Expand Union Rights and Workplace Democracy
truth-out.org | truth-out.org | 2018-05-11
On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced sweeping legislation that would dramatically expand labor rights and has already been endorsed by many progressive Democrats. Known as the Workplace Democracy Act, the legislation makes it easier for workers to join unions, speed up contract negotiations, roll back "right to work" laws and clamp down on union-busting tactics by employers.Sen. House Republicans Want to Straight-Up 'Break' the Actual System of Law Itself
Kerry Eleveld, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-05-11
They're trying to dismantle the legal system. | House Republicans are attacking the Department of Justice and by extension the special counsel's Russia probe on so many fronts it's impossible to keep track. Freedom Caucus chair Mark Meadows's new tact is to push for a federal audit of Robert Mueller under the guise of oversight in order to get an unredacted copy of the "scope memo," which lays out the boundaries of his Russia investigation. The Washington Post writes: Meadows, speaking Thursday during a taping of C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" that is to air Sunday, said he believed the audit is required under federal law and could not be completed without an unredacted copy of the memo written in August 2017 by Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein. [. . . ]Meadows and fellow Freedom Caucus member Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has pushed for weeks to. . .

Out of the Spotlight, Jeff Sessions Wreaks Havoc at the Justice Department This Week
truth-out.org | truth-out.org | 2018-05-11
There is a reason why Jeff Sessions continues to endure the indignities heaped upon him by President Trump and Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Ever since his days as an Alabama prosecutor during the War on Drugs era, Trump's attorney general has been dead set on cracking down on poor people in a return to tough-on-crime law enforcement. There probably has been no better week for the fulfillment of that agenda than this one. | On Monday, Sessions made official the Trump administration policy of ripping children from their families, if they crossed the US-Mexico border. On Tuesday, he traveled to Tennessee to taunt the 97 workers who were arrested during a recent immigration raid at a local meat processing plant. "I'm not shedding tears about them," Sessions said of the detained workers, and the 160 children…

Marx, Science, and Values

That Marx was a great, ground breaking revolutionary thinker is no longer at issue. The more interesting question is why some of his predictions did not come to pass. Philippine Chief Justice Ouster an Assault on Rights, Democracy
Human Rights Watch | hrw.org | 2018-05-11
Ousted Philippine Supreme Court Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno speaks to supporters at a rally outside the Supreme Court building on Taft Avenue, metro Manila, Philippines May 11, 2018. | The Philippine Supreme Court's unprecedented and nefarious removal of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno constitutes a frontal assault on human rights protections and democratic rule. | The court, by an 8 to 6 vote, approved a government-filed petition questioning the validity of Sereno's appointment. But Sereno's ouster was about much more. Last month, President Rodrigo Duterte declared Sereno an " enemy" and called for her impeachment for her criticism of his murderous "war on drugs" and other abusive policies. | Sereno, 57, is just the latest in a growing list of institutions and individuals — including Philippine media outlets and

Immigration Officials Are Using Pseudoscience to Justify Jailing Teenage Asylum Seekers with Adults
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-05-11
This week, the Trump administration announced it will detain asylum seekers and separate them from their children at the border. A case in California shows how some minors who arrived alone to seek asylum have been put in adult detention. Immigration authorities in California are refusing to release an Afghan asylum seeker from an adult detention center, even though a federal court had determined he is a child. His lawyers say the teenager, who has been held in adult detention for five months, is 17 years old. But ICE used a disputed "pseudoscience" age test based on a dental exam to insist he is over 18. The teen, who uses the name Hamid for privacy and protection, says he fled Afghanistan using a forged passport after the Taliban murdered his father. On Tuesday, Hamid spoke to Democracy Now! in his first phone interview from the Mesa Verde detention center in Bakersfield, California. We speak to his attorney Mariel Villarreal in New York.

The former intelligence agency head says Kim has been "masterful" in his manipulation. | Former CIA Director John Brennan threw cold water on anyone celebrating the progress President Donald Trump has made toward peace with North Korea in recent months, arguing that despite appearances of improved relations, the president is being manipulated by Kim Jong-un. "We are now on the eve of a summit meeting between the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world, and Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, who is a bloody and murderous despot, who has wanted to have the world stage before with an American president," Brennan said to MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace on "Deadline: White House. Here's How Saudi Arabia Took Donald Trump for a Ride
Ben Freeman, William D. Hartung, Tom Dispatch | alternet.org | 2018-05-10
"Think of the Saudi-Trump relationship as the love affair from hell. " | It's another Trump affair — this time without the allegations of sexual harassment (and worse), the charges and counter-charges, the lawsuits, and all the rest. So it hasn't gotten the sort of headlines that Stormy Daniels has garnered, but when it comes to influence, American foreign policy, and issues of peace and war, it couldn't matter more or be a bigger story (or have more money or lobbyists involved in it). Think of it as the great love affair of the age of Trump, the one between The Donald and the Saudi royals. And if there's any place to start laying out the story, it's naturally at a wedding, in this case in a tragic ceremony that happened to take place in Yemen, not Washington. On Sunday, April 22nd, planes from. . .

John Kelly Offers a Bigoted Defense of Breaking Up Immigrant Families
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-10
Jeff Sessions announced the new "zero-tolerance" policy this week. | White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Thursday defended Attorney General Jeff Sessions' announcement of a "zero tolerance" policy for unauthorized border crossings in the United States, a program that will involve splitting up families as the Justice Department removes immigrant children from their parents. The defenses of this policy inevitably neglect the fact that, even if you have no sympathy for parents, splitting up vulnerable immigrant families imposes immense trauma and costs on the children, who have often done nothing wrong. But when Kelly defended the policy in an interview with NPR, his explanation didn't simply rely on the usual rote rhetoric of "law and order" and "securing the border. " Instead, he denigrated the people who cross the border, their skills, and their ability to adapt: Let me step back and. . .
