Why Students Should Go On Strike Over Gun Violence.
Jennifer Berkshire, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-05
Kids could force politicians to act by refusing to go to school. | Teachers in West Virginia demonstrated the power of a huge strike last week. What if students used the same strategy to force politicians to act on gun control? In the latest episode of the Have You Heard podcast, AlterNet education contributor Jennifer Berkshire and co-host Jack Schneider talk to historian Jon Zimmerman about the power of student strikes to force political change. Zimmerman argues that strikes and walkouts, often led by students of color, have proven to be a uniquely powerful tool. Also featured: student organizers from suburban and urban schools who are organizing walkouts to demand action on gun violence. The following is an edited transcript. Listen to the entire episode. Have You Heard: You argue that a nationwide strike by students could force politicians to act on gun. . .

The State Department Hasn't Spent a Cent of the $120 Million Allotted to Fight Election Interference.
Ilana Novick, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-05
We could be looking at more Russian meddling this November. | The 2018 midterm elections are just months away, and American election systems remain vulnerable to attack. But according to a New York Times report, the State Department has yet to spend any of the $120 million allocated since 2016 to protect against interference–including from Russia–in our elections. As of March 2018, none of the " 23 analysts working in the department's Global Engagement Center–which has been tasked with countering Moscow's disinformation campaign–speaks Russian, and a department hiring freeze has hindered efforts to recruit the computer experts needed to track the Kremlin's efforts. The Lessons of Mass Incarceration for Child Welfare.

Support Truthout's mission today by making a tax-deductible donation. | The platinum anniversary of the most important shift in American child welfare policy in a generation just passed without notice or public discussion. But almost 20 years to the day after President Clinton signed the Adoption and Safe Families Act into law, those in the waiting area of the Bronx Family courthouse heard a 12-year-old sobbing inconsolably outside the courtroom, where he had just told the judge he did not want to be adopted. Gun Crazy: Life and Times in the Warfare State.
Carl Boggs | counterpunch.org | 2018-03-05
The recent death of British actress Peggy Cummins, at age 92, prompted my quick return to her 1950 film noir classic Gun Crazy — a movie that still resonates with historical and cultural force. Regarded as something of a transcendent work, Gun Crazy with its fugitive lovers on the run (Cummins being described as a "female Dillinger") would actually turn out to be far less transgressive than generally believed when the picture was first released. Cummins' passing occurred just before the most recent episode of mass killings in Broward County, Florida.

For Atheists, #MeToo Might Be Too Little, Too Late.
Amanda Marcotte, Salon | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-05
Atheists spoke out about sexual harassment years ago, to no avail. | In mid-February, #MeToo came to the community of activist atheists and science promoters, known as skeptics, a vibrant if somewhat insular subculture of the non-faithful. Buzzfeed published an expose of Lawrence Krauss, a physicist who became a minor celebrity due in part to his outspoken atheism, in which multiple women shared tales of his alleged sexual abusiveness. Krauss denies the multiple, separate accounts painstakingly detailed by Buzzfeed's reporters. However, Krauss is still facing a litany of professional repercussions: cancelled appearances, disavowals (most prominently by the American Humanist Association) and investigations into the accusations. But for many in the skeptic movement, Krauss's reckoning, while welcome, feels like too little, too late. For years, these activists told Salon, they've been agitating against sexual harassment in the community and trying. . .

The Many Roads That Lead to Bankruptcy in Chicago.

Thousands of drivers file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy each year to cope with ticket debt, getting a chance to lift license suspensions or to protect their vehicles from the city's boot list. But bankruptcy often leaves drivers in worse financial shape. Here are the stories of some drivers who have struggled with the consequences of their unpaid tickets. Some managed to pay off their debts; others are now in bankruptcy court. Robert Reich, RobertReich.org | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-04
Kushner is using his White House perch to make money. It's a bad look. | Before I turn to Jared Kushner, let me ask: Do you believe the U. S. government does the right thing all or most of the time? The Gallup organization started asking this question in 1963, when over 70 percent of Americans said they did. Since then, the percent has steadily declined. By 2016, before Trump became president, only 16 percent of Americans agreed. Why the decline? Surely various disappointments and scandals played a part — Vietnam, Watergate, Iran-Contra, "weapons of mass destruction," the Wall Street bailout. But the largest factor by far has been the rise of big money in politics. Most people no longer believe their voices count. That view is backed by solid research. First Amendment, Not the Second, Is How We Secure Liberty.
Carey Shenkman | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-03-03

But our words and ideas are our most important tools. Owning and using them will achieve more change than guns ever will. | The First Amendment protects peaceful protest, free speech and organizing as expressions of liberty. But the Second Amendment of today is not just about guns. Its adherents see it as an expression of dissent. Three-quarters of gun owners associate guns with their personal sense of freedom.
"The State Department's refusal to act is not only a product of President Trump's unwillingness to admit foreign powers may have played a role in his election, but also a "deep lack of confidence by Secretary of State Rex. . .

The Lessons of Mass Incarceration for Child Welfare.

Ready to challenge injustice and spark real change? So are we. The judge had gone ahead anyway to terminate his mother's parental rights — as judges around the country do tens of thousands of times a year to comply with ASFA. | Touted at the time as a victory for children, ASFA has instead put America first in…

Here are some stories of Chicagoans driven into ticket debt. | We've been reporting on how unpaid parking and automated traffic camera tickets can quickly spiral out of control for Chicago's working poor, and particularly for African Americans. Robert Reich: Kushner's Unconscionable Conflicts.
Princeton professor Martin Gilens and Professor Benjamin Page of Northwestern University analyzed 1,799 policy issues. . .

First Amendment, Not the Second, Is How We Secure Liberty.
Carey Shenkman | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-03-03
Our political system is more willing to take near-absolutist positions on gun ownership than it is with free speech, especially when it comes to the speech rights of people of color or Muslims. Why Students Should Go On Strike Over Gun Violence.

So are we. The judge had gone ahead anyway to terminate his mother's parental rights — as judges around the country do tens of thousands of times a year to comply with ASFA. | Touted at the time as a victory for children, ASFA has instead put America first in…

For years, these activists told Salon, they've been agitating against sexual harassment in the community and trying. . .

Fifty years later, a new Poor People's Campaign connects religious faith to social justice. | Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of three kids in a family she describes as deeply committed to improving life for the excluded and marginalized. This coupling–faith and justice–led Theoharis to work with the National Union of the Homeless as a University of Pennsylvania undergraduate. The Many Roads That Lead to Bankruptcy in Chicago.
Melissa Sanchez, ProPublica | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-04
Here are some stories of Chicagoans driven into ticket debt. | We've been reporting on how unpaid parking and automated traffic camera tickets can quickly spiral out of control for Chicago's working poor, and particularly for African Americans.

So are we. The judge had gone ahead anyway to terminate his mother's parental rights — as judges around the country do tens of thousands of times a year to comply with ASFA. | Touted at the time as a victory for children, ASFA has instead put America first in…

For years, these activists told Salon, they've been agitating against sexual harassment in the community and trying. .

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other peace and anti-apartheid activists were frequent guests in her home, and even as a child, Theoharis understood that religious faith–in her case, Presbyterian–had to be linked to social justice.
