As an organization that has worked with countless immigrants in detention who identify as trans, we bear witness to the violence and transphobia that our clients face every day in detention. Today, on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, we recognize and remember those who have been killed each year, both in the U.S. and abroad. Thank you to the community groups that are organizing the vigil in Phoenix. ...

Arizona 2017 Transgender Day Of Remembrance

November 20, 2017, 6:00pm - November 20, 2017, 9:00pm

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is a sobering day for recognizing the incredible violence against transgender people that still occurs all over the world, and remembering those who have been killed each year. At the Phoenix vigil, we will gather to mourn and read the names of our trans siblings who lost their lives in 2017. We honor them by supporting each other and drawing together for strength. Several LGBTQ community organizations will also be present to share resources. Join us and show the trans community in Phoenix that they are loved!

Installation: El Alma de Mis Raíces - The Soul of My Roots

October 14, 2017, 10:00am - November 15, 2017, 8:00pm

El Alma de Mis Raíces - The Soul of My Roots - A Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona Professional Artist Series In collaboration with Phoenix-based teaching artist, Emily Costello, and the Phoenix Art Museum, this series features artwork created by teenage boys from a local shelter for unaccompanied minors from Central and South America. Throughout the summer, participants visited the Museum to draw inspiration from the Museum’s Border Crossings: Mexico and the American Southwest exhibition. They shared observations and interpretations, practiced sketching and learned painting techniques. What resulted were visually rich narratives that demonstrate how each young artist connects with their roots. The works in the exhibition are diverse, yet reflect shared experiences; issues of heritage, culture, identity, life, love, spirituality, dreams, environment and memories. The Soul of My Roots / El Alma de Mis Raíces is currently installed in the Wolfswinkel Education Building, located in the south courtyard of Phoenix Art Museum. Regular Hours to view the Installation: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 8 am-5 pm Wednesdays: 8 am-7 pm Weekends (except Discount Tire Free Family Weekends): CLOSED Discount Tire Free Family Weekends October 14-15, November 11-12 Saturdays: 10 am - 5 pm Sundays: noon - 5 pm **Please note: Hours of admission will vary from the normal operating hours of Phoenix Art Museum.** Visit www.phxart.org/exhibition/free-arts-az for more information. The Professional Artist Series program at Free Arts is generously sponsored by The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation.

Immigrant prisons are overseen by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Since ICE was created in 2003, there have been 177 confirmed deaths in these prisons. In our new film, we explore conditions inside these prisons, exposing substandard medical care, widespread physical and sexual abuse, virtual slave labor working conditions and more. These abuses happen behind closed doors with little to no oversight. Watch now and share with friends. #CloseImmigrantPrisons Learn more about our upcoming film on immigrant prisons.
