While on the campaign trail, Donald Trump called CNN's Erin Burnett for suggesting immigrants" pay taxes. But nationally, they contribute an estimated $11.64bn a year in just state and local taxes, with at least 50% of undocumented immigrant households filing tax returns, according to the non-partisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. Vermont's undocumented people pay almost $4m a year in state and local taxes and, at 7.9% of income, contribute slightly more than the effective rate for the top 1% of Americans. …

Thanks to all the work the community has done showing up to City Hall since December, organizing different community events to fight back against the new administration and resist the racist, xenophobic, and unjust immigration policies, and collecting around 1,000 signatures and counting…. the moment has finally arrived for a vote on the Welcoming City Resolution which was proposed by Dan Besse after weeks of organizing and putting pressure on City Council to adopt such a resolution!

Y'all have shown time and time again that we are going to stand up, resist, and fight back and now we need to step up once again in this struggle and get as many folks to come out as possible next Monday to City Hall, the 27th, to stand in solidarity with the most marginalized in our community and show City Council that Winston-Salem believes in human rights, dignity, and compassion!

The new administration's threats towards the Latinx community, Muslims, immigrants, refugees, and countless others makes this moment extremely URGENT moving forward in taking steps to join with the over 37 other cities across the country standing firm in their resistance status despire the threats. This resolution may not go far enough compared to other cities who have taken a greater stand, but we must ensure this resolution passes as we continue to struggle forward and fight against xenophobic, racist, and unjust policies/rhetoric that are separating families, making millions live in fear, and ruining the lives of those in our community, state, and country.

As always, this is just one step of many towards building a more compassionate city built upon justice and dignity that protects the most marginalized and will resist at all costs.

This is an important step in the right direction as we continue to grow, build, resist, and fight together! See you soon!!! PLEASE SHARE WITH EVERYONE. If you absolutely can't make it, make sure to at least email/call your city council members and let them know where you stand!!! (even if you are coming to City Council, please email, write, and call as well!)

Solidarity.
